Nutrients Added to Our Wheat and Maize Flour – and Their Benefits

What exactly goes into fortified flour?

The answer is a carefully formulated mix of vitamins and minerals recommended by Kenya’s Ministry of Health and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). These micronutrients are added in specific amounts to ensure that each kilogram of flour delivers a significant health boost. Below are the key nutrients we add and why they matter for your health:

  • Vitamin A: We include Vitamin A to support good vision, immune function, and child development. A nutrient essential for preventing night blindness and boosting immunity. By fortifying flour with Vitamin A, we help families maintain healthy eyesight and resistance to infections.
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Thiamine is added to help your body convert carbohydrates into energy and to support proper nerve function. This B1 boost prevents deficiencies that can cause fatigue, weakness, or the nerve disorder beriberi. By enjoying foods made with our flour, you’re getting Thiamine that keeps your energy levels and nervous system on track.
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Riboflavin plays a crucial role in energy production and helps maintain healthy skin and eyes. It’s easily lost when grains are milled, so fortification replaces this nutrient to prevent problems like cracked lips, mouth sores, or vision issues that arise from B2 deficiency. With fortified flour, you get the riboflavin needed for vibrant skin and good vision.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Niacin is crucial for metabolism and DNA repair. This helps prevent pellagra – a disease marked by dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia – which historically affected communities relying on unfortified maize. By including niacin, our flour supports digestion, nervous system health, and keeps your skin healthy.
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine): Pyridoxine is essential for brain development, immune function, and the creation of red blood cells. Getting enough B6 can improve mood and reduce the risk of anemia. Through fortified flour, even your everyday ugali or uji can contribute to better cognitive development in children and a stronger immune response for all ages.
  • Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin): Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve health and making red blood cells. It’s added in tiny but crucial amounts (approximately 0.005 mg per kg) because the body only requires a small amount to prevent pernicious anemia. B12 is mainly obtained from animal products in the diet, so adding it to flour helps ensure everyone – including those who eat less meat – gets this essential nutrient. With B12-fortified flour, we help protect against anemia and support healthy brain and nerve function.
  • Folic Acid (Vitamin B9): Folic acid is best known for its role in preventing congenital disabilities. This is especially important for women of childbearing age, as adequate folate intake can prevent neural tube defects in newborns. But folic acid benefits everyone: it helps the body produce DNA and new cells, supporting growth and a healthy immune system. Thanks to fortified flour, Kenya has seen improvements in folate status, contributing to healthier pregnancies and babies.
  • Iron: Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin in our blood, which transports oxygen throughout the body. By fortifying flour with iron, we help combat iron deficiency anemia – a condition that causes fatigue, weakness, and poor concentration, and is common among women and children in Kenya. Eating foods made from iron-fortified flour can improve energy levels, support cognitive development in children, and reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy.
  • Zinc: Zinc supports a robust immune system, aids wound healing, and is essential for normal growth in children. In many Kenyan diets that are high in maize, zinc intake can be low, contributing to stunted growth and increased infections. Fortified flour provides extra zinc to help children grow to their full potential and to help everyone better resist illnesses. Simply put, the zinc in our flour strengthens your body’s natural defenses and growth processes.

Each of these added nutrients has a specific health benefit, but together they form a powerful toolkit for better nutrition. By eating fortified flour daily, families get a boost of vitamins and minerals that can lead to improved school performance in children, fewer illnesses, safer pregnancies, and more energetic, productive days. Fortification is a simple addition to the food, but it makes a big difference in people’s lives.

Why Fortifying Flour Matters for Kenya’s Health

Micronutrient deficiencies – often referred to as hidden hunger – pose a significant public health challenge in Kenya. Many Kenyans, especially children and women, don’t get enough essential vitamins and minerals from their daily diets alone. For example, over 60% of Kenyan women live with iron deficiency (leading to anemia), and about 18% of children under five suffer stunted growth due to poor nutrition. Fortifying staple foods, such as flour, is a proven way to bridge these nutritional gaps. By adding vitamins and minerals to the wheat flour in your chapati or the maize flour in your ugali, we help ensure every serving is more nourishing. This boosts public health by reducing problems like anemia, congenital disabilities, impaired immunity, and other issues caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

Kenya recognized the importance of food fortification early on. Just as iodized salt helped eliminate goiter decades ago, fortified flours are now mandated to improve today’s nutrition. Since 2012, the Ministry of Health (through the Kenya National Food Fortification Alliance) has required that all packaged wheat and maize flours be enriched with essential micronutrients. This is why you’ll see the official Kuboresha Afya fortification logo on many flour packages – it’s a symbol that the product has been enhanced for your wellbeing. At Malindi Flour Millers, we take pride in being part of this national effort. Each bag of our flour contributes to a healthier, stronger community by providing nutrients that support growth, immunity, and overall vitality.

Our Responsibility: Nutrition and Community Wellbeing

For Malindi Flour Millers, fortifying flour isn’t just a regulatory requirement – it’s a responsibility to our community that we embrace with pride. We understand that the flour we mill becomes the food on your table, and thus we have a duty to make that food as nourishing as possible. Our company’s mission is rooted in caring for the health of our consumers and the wellbeing of our neighbors. We actively support food and nutrition programs in our region, from educating families about balanced diets to participating in school health initiatives. This means you might find us working with local schools to provide fortified porridge for children, or collaborating with public health campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of vitamins and minerals in a balanced diet. When we say “Your trusted partner in high-quality flour”, we mean that we see ourselves as partners in improving health outcomes, too.

Leading the Way: Awards and Recognition in Fortification

Our dedication to fortification and nutrition has not gone unnoticed. Malindi Flour Millers has been recognized nationally for excellence in food fortification, reinforcing that we’re on the right track in our nutrition mission. In 2024, we were honored with the “Millers for Nutrition Champion Award” in the Kenya Micronutrient Fortification Index (KMFI) program. This award – part of the KMFI initiative led by the Cereal Millers Association and TechnoServe – identified us as a champion miller going above and beyond in adding nutrients to our products. It was a proud moment for our entire team, as our continuous investments in quality and compliance have confirmed that we are leaders in nourishing Kenya.

Building on that success, 2025 brought even more reason to celebrate. At the 2025 Kenya Millers Fortification Index Awards, our flagship brands earned top rankings among all the flours in the country. In the maize flour category, Malindi’s Unga King and Mumtaz fortified maize flours tied for 1st place, while our Riziki fortified maize flour clinched the 2nd place spot. Essentially, our products swept the awards podium – a remarkable achievement that underscores our consistency and commitment to fortification quality. These awards were presented at a high-profile event in Nairobi, attended by government leaders and industry peers, where winners were celebrated for excelling in adding life-improving nutrients to everyday foods. To have three of our maize flour brands recognized as the best in the nation is an achievement we deeply cherish. It means that when you buy a Malindi Flour Miller product, you are choosing some of Kenya’s most trusted and nutritiously enriched brands.
